My website is acting up, so I will post todays journal here:
1/28/2006
I have not written in awhile. I am doing well, except that I have been having memory problems that have become bothersome. I talked to my nuerologist about it, and he said that it is probably due to my nuerotoxicity from the cyclosporine. The dammage that was done to my brain during my transplant because the cyclosporine can be gradual and progressive. He will do another assement to see if any pills can help, but the sucess rate is iffy.

Hi Alison
Just wanted to update you on Charlotte's health. She had the stemcell transplant 6 weeks ago and has had a 70% cure so far! Isn't that brilliant. We are all so relieved. Already Charlotte wants to go back to work and carry on normal life again, but has to wait for her body to fully recover from the chemo. Her sister, Courtney, was 100% perfect stemcell donar with absolutley no complications at all. We are so relieved its all gone well and its going to get even better. Through your site we heard from another family here in Christchurch whose son has just been diagnosed. Quiet incredible really. Thanks Alison, luv Julie

Hi: I have no idea what your website is about. I was led here by looking for Lula Braddock. I took care of her for several years in Sunnyvale. There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about her. She was an awsome woman. If you are somehow related, I'm sure you must be just like her. If you know how I could get in contact with Nancee, Mrs. B's granddaughter the info would be greatly appreciated

Wow!! You went through a lot. I'm so glad you made it:-)Thank you for sharing. The journal is very interesting. Also helpful to others. For example my potasium tends to be low and found from the journal could be sign of kidney problems. Also, my bili is 6.8. Maybe should insist this get checked out more-see a PNH expert (last saw one in ' 99). Got a lot of edema when out in heat all weekend.

Hello, I was looking for some PNH websites and stumbled across this one. Allison, you are very inspiring, and your problems seem small compared to mine!
I was feeling depressed about my PNH, and that's why I was looking for websites again. But I was diagnosed with this in 1994, when I was 24 years old. I didn't really take it seriously either, until in 1996 I had orders to Aviano
AB in Italy. I had caught a bad cold and managed to get dehydrated, then I was hospitalized for the dehydration and then I lost partial function of my kidneys, and they had to transfuse me with a couple of
pints of blood, I will never forget that awful pain, I just whished I was dead. Then the doctor put me on Prednisone for 2 months until my blood count came back up, I hate that stuff. I swelled up like
a balloon, plus I lost my orders, but I begged the doctor to let me stay in the Air Force, and not to relieve me of duty. So now I just go have check ups with a hemotologist at Ft Bliss, in El Paso. I just take iron and folic acid every day to treat the anemia
and that's about it, except I did get sick the other day and had to take the steriods for a couple of weeks so. The doctors haven't really pushed the BMT issue, that stuff sounds so complicated, I just keep praying that GOD will take this disease away, I am always wondering why I got blessed with it.
I agree with alot of the things you said in your journal about experiences in life making you stronger! So good luck on your wedding and the Dental Career. Carola Duckett

I truly hope that I can help you - and that you can help me.
I need the money but I also want to do something with my life and help someone else at the same time.
In my country selling is not prohibited by law!
So I want to sell you my kidney. I am a 21 years old male - german race. Additionally I am very healthy. I study at the Business University in Austria (Europe) where I live too. Austria has better hospitals than Germany! Well, I dont have debts, but I suffer from having so very low money. We can talk about the price. In Austria it is not prohibited to donor a kidney - there is no law - and it is ethnically allowed but you need to pay the costs. The costs are a little bit less than in the USA .
But I believe that the general and private hospitals are compared to the USA EXCELLENT and much better (sorry, thats true) And maybe, if you are insured with the national austrian health-insurance ("Krankenkasse Selbstversicherung") than the insurance pays the costs - even if you dont have the citzenship.
Please contact me, I am truly serious. And if you come to Austria you would truly enjoy your stay in this famous country where Mozart Amadeus lived.

I hope you are resting this weekend and not worrying about stuff. You have been through so much and have the sweetest disposition of anyone I know. I just read this little saying. "Don't worry about tomorrow, God is already there". Remember to take care of yourself by eating, resting, exercising and laughing. It's very important that we all keep our priorities strait and staying healthy is number one. I'll see you on Monday at 7:05. Love, Theresa

I am 17 years old an have had PNH since i was 9 years old. I have had my appendix an galblader removed since than. I have come near death due to the appendix (which normal healthy people even die from)
I know for a fact that someday i will no longer have this, an also that it won't be by a bone marrow transplant.... my hopes have always been high an i have always pushed my body to its limets with this.... anyways thanks for your time.

I am 25 years old and have just celebrated my ten year anniversary with PNH. I am treated at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. I am very thankful to live so close to such a wonderful hospital. I am treated every four weeks with three transfusions. I recently have come down with severe vascultis and some major kidney problems. But no matter how bad things get I am just thankful to be alive. I will be graduating college this year and truly believe I have a wonderful life ahead of me. My advice to all Pnhers is to hang in there. Thanks for sharing your story and giving us all a place to read and learn more about PNH.

I discovered your page months ago and was just checking to see how things were going for you. I have a son with PNH.Diagnosed in 1990 when a senior in highschool. He is doing great right now...but a BMT is probably in the future.
I will tell him about this page because he has been searching a long time for fellow "pnh-ers".Thank-you for sharing and God bless you. Just a Mother.

I think it is great that all of you have come together.
My boyfriend was diagnosed with apalstic anemia in Nov. of 1996, since then it has been a roller coaster ever since. In May 2000 we visited his hematologist at Johns Hopkins and learned the anemia is gone but he now has pnh. I worry about him incessently. It is a great comfort to read everyone's entry. I feel like we are in a war and the more people I know of in it makes me feel like we can win. Good Luck to all of you fighting and to all of you suffering without the physical effects (family and friends). Take care and God Bless. We can win this battle.

Hi Allison,
I hope your recovery from the BMT continues to go well.
When I was 19 I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia which was treated with both cortical and anabolic steroids (prednisone and Anadrol)
I had a positive response to the treatment but developed PNH in the aftermath. This was in 1972. I had several blood tranfusions and was scheduled to receive one on my 20th birthday in 1973. When they checked my counts, they found that they were up and I didn't need one. I haven't had to have one since. This was the best birthday present I ever received.
For about 20 years I continued on lower doses of the Prednisone and Anadrol. I've been very fortunate that my hemoglobin stays at a level between 11 & 13 without transfusions.
Manufacture of Anadrol was discontinued about 5 or 6 years ago and my doctor switched me to a a drug called Danocrine which has worked well for me.
I've lived a near normal life since being diagnosed with PNH. I completed college and have a good career going.
Your story will encourage others with this condition who find your website.
I hope my addition to your guestbook will add a little more encouragement for those who might need it.

Hi Alison! Glad to hear everything's going well after your BMT. I came across your website while at work, so I can't write too much (have to get back to work...). I was diagnosed with PNH back in 1982 at age 20 (I am 38 now). I looked into the BMT route, but have no compatible donors in my family and there have not been any perfect matches located in the Registry (yet). In the meantime, They have been treating me with immune suppressants such as antithymocyte globulin (ATG), cyclosporine, and currently ProGraf (aka Tacrolimus). I still get red cell transfusions about once a month, though, to keep my hematocrit around 20 - 22. I haven't let PNH run my life, instead I choose to work around it. I finished college, work full-time, got married, go jet-skiing, drag-racing, etc... The key is attitude, and it sounds like you've got a great one. I'm happy you have the opportunity to beat this for good!! Best wishes for the New Year and many years thereafter.

PNH also. I was told I had that last March after being told 2 years before that that I had pure red cell aplasia-a
form of aplastic anemia. My PNH is doing very badly right now, but I have to keep a good attitude! Thank you for

Dear Allison:
I was speaking with your grandfather today, Charlie Smaltz, who works for
My company. Charlie, being the proud grandfather that he is related to me
Your medical story and how truly proud he is of his granddaughter. I was so
impressed with your story that I thought I would write you a letter to
indicate my support as well as my prayers.
You are an extremely courageous person who has endured more than their fair
share of life's difficulties. I can relate to this because my daughter
Suzie, who is 24 and married with two young boys ages 2 and 1, was
Diagnosed with thyroid cancer this past year. She has undergone two major surgeries
plus radiation treatments. As parents, I can share with Charlie the deep
concern that we have for our children, especially with serious medical
problems. Oftentimes, it's we parents that need the emotional support
since we have such deep love for our children. Your strength and determination
is the kind of emotional support that your parents and grandparents need
during this trying time.
My wife and I were also comforted as well by our daughters determination
and
conviction that she was going to be healed of this dreaded illness. You
mean so much to your grandfather Charlie and he is pulling like you
wouldn't believe for your total and complete recovery.
I would like to add my support and prayers for your total and compete
recovery. I pray that God blesses you and your doctors in this very
difficult medical recovery process.
Warmest Regards,

Hi Ali, I heard you had a tough day today. Don't get down and sad ok. Just take everything
one day at a time. I know you are tough and can get through this just fine. I found a
quote
today that I though you might enjoy. Its about balance, and I feel that is what you need
right
now after the tough day in the hospital. "The best and safest thing is to keep a
balance in
your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live
that
way, you are really a wise women."-Euripides I hope that with the power of the spirit
and
your family and friends that you can have this balance with you everyday. Remember your
biggest strength comes from within. Love and Kisses, Love, Mindy

Hi Alison, I'm a friend of your dad. He's very proud of your new page! As you begin your
journey to recovery, I wanted to share a story with you and all those who visit here, to
remind people there are things we can do to help you to reach a speedy recovery. In High
School Biology class we conducted an experiment. It was called 'good thoughts and bad
thoughts.' We hooked up Ernie to an EKG monitor, dimmed the lights and took a standard
reading. On queue, and un-beknownst to Ernie, the class started sending "bad
thoughts" to
Ernie. Things like "Ernie, you are so ugly." Considering this was a class of
high school
teenagers, I'm sure the thoughts were a bit more colorful, but you get the idea.... To our
surprise, Ernie's EKG reading changed. I don't remember which way, but it was amazing,
that Ernie's readings were responding! Again, on a silent queue, our thoughts changed from
bad thoughts to good thoughts. "Ernie, you are looking good today," etc. Again,
to our
amazement, Ernie's EKG reading 'responded' the the change in thoughts. Ernie was an
african violet. I can only imagine the power of positive thinking (and speaking) when it
is
shared among friends, family and loved ones. Everybody, please send (and tell) Alison your
good thoughts as constant reminder that she is cared for and loved by many! Alison, for
you
and your brother, I send you good thoughts for good health and good life!
